A man from Verbank, N. Y. was sentenced after injuring his two children in a DWI accident.

Andrew Turansky, 48, apologized in court as he pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular assault. The judge of Duchess County, Gerald V. Hayes, sentenced Turansky to 16 weekends in jail, four months on an electronic monitoring device, and five years probation.

The judge initially wanted to give Turansky a longer sentence, but chose a more minimal prison term, allowing him to keep his job and health benefits for the children.

The accident occurred on August 20. Turansky was returning home with his children after attending an event at the mall when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree. According to the police report, Turansky had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he was arrested.

Turansky's daughter, 11, suffered serious brain injuries as a result of the accident while his son, 14, sustained broken bones and other minor injuries.

Since the accident, Turansky has been attending alcohol abuse programs.

the fact is that we all make mistakes. wouldn't it be wonderful if we could undo our mistakes. your fathers
actions were unfair and irresponsible. he is the first to admit that. only God is perfect. the fact is that your father would give anything in this world to redo that moment in his life if that was possible.. that is not possible. he too has suffered tremendously as well as you. people repent for their sins and people can change when they work hard. your father has worked hard since that accident. this was an accident. it was not done on purpose. he could never hurt anyone. he is not capable. he was broken at that time. he has changed. the fact is he is not a monster. he loves you and your brother very much. he never stopped loving you. youn only get one dad and nobody loves a daughter like their dad. and your dad just might be the most awesome man in the world. you can not imagine what torment it is for him to know that he hurt the two people that he loves most in the world and still have to be brave enough to go on. as we grow up we realize there is another side to every story . l wonder what kind of support you are looking for since he is not allowed to see you or speak to you until you give him that permission. you would never be sorry for granting him the permission to love and support you. your father is not a monster. l do not know where you got that idea. you most likely have one of the finest men on earth waiting to give you whatever support you need. you may want to open your heart and forgive because l am quite sure that would be the best decision you have ever made in your life.
