On Feb. 3 a maintenance man working at the Mesquite Woods Apartments was instructed by management to place 30 bug bombs inside of Miles Brown's apartment to eliminate a cockroach infestation. When he activated 18 of the canisters, the bug bombs ignited and caused a powerful explosion and flash fire. The strength of the explosion blew out brick walls, windows and doors in the apartment. Police investigators at the scene believe that the pilot light on the apartment's gas water heater was to blame for sparking the fiery explosion.

Miles-Brown was in the apartment at the time of the explosion and sustained hearing loss, second-degree burns, and a back injury according to her lawsuit. She has visible scars on her face and arms.

Miles-Brown's lawsuit was filed in Galveston County Court and no hearing date has been scheduled yet.
