After an argument with their parents, the two 14-year-old friends decided to run away from home. They stole a single-engine Mooney M20C from one of their parents. The boys evaded three levels of security at Big Bear Airport. According to Garry Dokter, the airport's general manager, the boys were able to gain access to the airport and keys for the aircraft. Pilots called the plane's owner when they saw the boys on the runway.

The plane went down in Joshua Tree National Park. Officials think the plane may have run out of gas.
The boys were arrested and brought to San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall.

Pilots are not required to check in at Big Bear Airport and the airport does not have a control tower.
