According to Wyeth, the recently settled case involved a woman who claimed to have suffered heart-valve damage after taking Pondimin, a drug that the company marketed.
The drugs in question, Pondimin and Redux®, were pulled from the market in 1997 after studies found that the drugs increased the risk of heart valve damage.
Since the recall, Wyeth has taken more than $21 billion in charges to cover its financial liability to former users of its drugs. As of this writing, there are tens of thousands of other product liability suits against Wyeth that are still pending in the United States.
