The January 2001 accident at a Philadelphia senior care center left one man dead and another with severe brain damage.

Both men fell more than 30 feet while working in an elevator shaft after the scaffolding they were standing on suddenly collapsed.

Neither Scotty Bruce nor Thomas Stinson was wearing fall arrest protection at the time of the accident. Stinson was killed, and Bruce sustained serious injuries and permanent brain damage.

Family members filed suit against the general contractor, the owner of the building, the lumber company that provided the scaffolding equipment, and one other company involved in the project.

Bruce's family was awarded $14 million to cover his ongoing medical care, while Stinson's family received $3.5 million for their wrongful death claim.
