Contractor settles in wrongful death suit

In February 2003, Michael Jesus Del Rico was working at the Downtown LA Caltrans District 7 headquarters. Del Rico, an apprentice welder, was cleaning a parking structure that was under construction when he fell 28 feet to his death.

An investigation found that the accident was the result of safety code violations at the structure. A lawsuit filed by the victim's family alleged that Herrick Corp., a steel construction company based in Pleasanton, Calif., was liable for the violations and for Del Rico's death.

The $550,000 settlement agreement between the company and Del Rico's family also calls for pending criminal charges against Herrick to be dropped provided the company is not charged with further safety violations over the next year.
