Crowley worked at the Oxford Paper Mill in Rumford, Maine for several years in the 1960s and Richard worked at International Paper in Jay, Maine from 1952 to 1987. In the lawsuits, the two men allege that they developed mesothelioma as a result of inhaling asbestos fibers during their employment at the mills.

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. The lungs thicken with mucous, causing shortness of breath and eventual death.

The lawsuits did not name the paper mill companies as defendants.

More than 70 businesses have filed for bankruptcy as a result of asbestos-related lawsuits and thousands of cases are pending in U.S. courts.
