If accepted, the people of Freedom, a town in northern Wisconsin, would bring suit against various U.S. oil companies. After leaking into groundwater from an underground storage tank, octane enhancer methyl tertiary-butyl ether, or MtBE, infiltrated wells in the area that are used for drinking water. Freedom would be one of at least 200 communities that are currently seeking damages from about 30 oil companies who produce the chemical.

Cary McDougal of the Texas law firm Baron & Budd said he couldn't predict how long the case might take, but assured residents that some of the best lawyers in the country would be working for them.
