The ship was en route from Grand Cayman to Montego Bay with 2,690 passengers and 1,123 crew members aboard when the fire started. One passenger died after going into cardiac arrest and eleven others were injured. Gerald Cahill, chief financial officer of Carnival Corp., stated that at least two of the injured were suffering from smoke inhalation.

Crew members used the ship's public address system to alert the passengers of the fire.

Officials are assessing the damage which affected at least five decks. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
