Johnson was allegedly misled by Des Moines, Iowa-based AmerUs Life Insurance. The premiums on these policies reportedly cost Johnson $375,000 a year. Johnson's lawyers claimed that the policies were falsely represented and that the insurance company took advantage of Johnson in order to receive large commissions for the sale.
AmerUs Life Insurance, lawyers for the company, and insurance agent Rodney Brown deny the accusations and question the basis of the claim. The lawyers went on to state that Johnson and his uncle, Andre Melton, have likely just changed their minds concerning a legitimate insurance deal.
According to AmerUs Life Insurance lawyers, the insurance coverage that Johnson received was not unusual given the amount of Johnson's NFL contract. They added that should Johnson surrender the insurance policies, he would forfeit the money he has already paid and incur penalties.
