Donna Combs worked at Hancock County Hospital, formerly Hancock Memorial, as a radiology technician. She worked at the hospital until 2001, at which time a blood disorder left her unable to work.

Combs' attorneys contended that Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Co., the insurance provider, acted in bad faith by terminating her disability benefits.

Jurors reportedly approached Combs after they rendered their verdict. According to Ralph Bratch, an attorney for Combs, the jurors said they wanted to make sure insurance companies do not treat policyholders as Combs was treated.
