The EEOC alleges that UPS rejected Ronnis Mason's request for reasonable accommodation for his beard when he applied to be a driver at the company. A beard is considered a symbol of the Rastafarian's connection with God; however, UPS considers it a violation of the company's grooming policy for drivers.

UPS alleges that Mason left in the middle of the application process, never stated that he was Rastafarian and never requested reasonable accommodation for his beard.

"We promote religious tolerance, all we insist on is that applicants seek an accommodation for grooming guidelines," says UPS spokesperson Norman Black.
