Legal action is being sought to refund policyholders of these illegally charged fees that involved both business owner insurance policies and workers' compensation insurance policies.
The Department of Insurance filed a complaint on April 3 that alleged that Connecticut-based The Hartford Insurance Group knowingly allowed Irvine, California-based agent Superior Insurance Services to charge up to $100 in illegal fees per policy. Though The Hartford Insurance Group did not receive any money from these illegal fees, California state law holds the insurance company responsible.
Shannon Lapierre, a spokeswoman for The Hartford Insurance Group, stated that Superior Insurance Services charged these fees without the knowledge or approval of The Hartford. She added that The Hartford Insurance Group is working with the California Department of Insurance to resolve the matter.
