The lawsuit was filed by the family of civil rights lawyer Lloyd Barbee, who died 18 months after undergoing surgery at The Queen's Medical Center.
According to the lawsuit, in 2001 Barbee, 76, underwent an operation to remove a cancerous kidney. Dr. William Yarborough performed the procedure.
The lawsuit states that after the surgery, Barbee suffered from excessive bleeding and that he was not properly monitored during the recovery period. He died in December 2002.
Queen's and Yarborough deny Barbee's death involved any form of malpractice.
The jury's verdict may be appealed.
