Formosa Plastics lawsuits filed almost 2 years after explosion

Injured employees and the families of five employees who were killed have filed civil lawsuits against multiple companies for the April 23, 2004 explosion.

The lawsuits claim that contractors failed to reconnect the plant's water deluge system that day, resulting in 15,000 pounds of chemicals being spilled into a reactor, which then caused the explosion.

Kelly Construction, one of the companies that worked on the sprinkler system, would not comment.

The lawsuits do not name Formosa Plastics, which bought the plant in 2002, as a defendant. Borden Chemical Inc.--now Hexion Specialty Chemicals --is being sued for alleged design changes that caused the leak.
