The woman, 35-year-old Mia House, suffered permanent brain damage while giving birth in July 2003. The suit claims that anesthesiologist Dr. Angeluzzi gave House a spinal anesthetic for a C-section and during the operation, failed to notice her blood-oxygen level dropping to dangerous levels. She also wasn't properly resuscitated, decreasing the oxygen flow to her brain.
In 1998, Norwalk Hospital failed to bar Dr. Angeluzzi after he assisted in an operation that left 36-year-old Sadie Cole in the same condition as House. In fact, Cole and House are currently in the same medical facility that specializes in caring for patients with their condition.
Court records indicate that the hospital agreed to pay about $12.7 million, while Dr. Angeluzzi and Norwalk Anesthesiology P.C. paid $4 million. Dr. Angeluzzi went on voluntary leave in 2003 and surrendered his physician's license a year later.
House's parents will be creating the Mia Michelle House Trust which will preserve her assets to fund her lifetime medical care and provide for her daughter.
