The former security guard, Shannon Kennedy, 32, said in a written statement submitted to Wal-Mart, that she called police and then chased after a suspect in her car after he grabbed a 77-year-old woman's purse.

The purse was recovered behind a nearby store.

Three days after the alleged incident, the woman was fired because she violated company policy when she pursued the suspect. Kennedy's attorney, John Aretakis, claims a male security guard was given an award by Wal-Mart for similar actions about a year ago.

A spokesman for the retail giant, Kevin Gardner, said he could not comment on pending litigation and that he was unfamiliar with the details of the policy in question.

Kennedy is seeking $1 million in her lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in the Supreme Court.
