The names of the boys have not been released because they are only 11 and 12 years old. Deputy Police Chief Barry Plunkett say that a teacher talked to the boys after hearing from other students that the two boys spoke about smoking marijuana. The teacher contacted the police after finding a homemade pipe with marijuana residue in one of their desks.

Police later spoke with the boys at their parents' homes. At that time police found a baggie of what is believed to be marijuana, as well as a lighter, on the 12-year-old as he was being questioned. At the home of the 11-year-old, officers found a pen that smelled of marijuana and had been converted into a smoking device.
