Tara Hawkins died two days after giving birth to Emmanuel (the “miracle baby") due to significant brain injuries sustained after an attack. The autopsy report said Hawkins had died due to damaged arteries in her neck that cut off blood supply to her brain, however, the lawsuit alleges that doctors never checked for such injuries.
According to an independent neurologist who reviewed Hawkins’ records, there is a chance she could be alive today if proper treatment was rendered. He said that doctors at Dekalb never looked into the true causes of her underlying condition and there was never adequate treatment provided for her injuries.
Nonnie Hawkins’ attorney John Crongeyer says there were several things, including basic medical techniques, which could and should have been done to help Hawkins.
Dekalb released a statement saying their medical staff was nothing short of heroic in the level of care provided to Hawkins. The said that despite the tragic circumstances, Hawkins body was sustained for 115 days so Emmanuel could be brought into the world.
Nonnie Hawkins says she is saddened by what happened and she will keep fighting until justice is done.
