Both recalls were prompted by a high occurrence of ReNu with MostureLoc users among reported cases of a rare eye disease caused by the Fusarium fungus. MoistureLoc users comprised two-thirds of the reported 122 cases.

In a statement posted on the company’s Website, Bausch & Lomb Chairman and CEO, Ron Zarrella, stated that the safety of their customers is the top priority. Zarella also asserted that there was no evidence of tampering or contamination. The company’s conclusion is "that there may be some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula, when combined with certain environmental factors, lens wear and care practices, and other factors, that might increase the risk of Fusarium infection in rare circumstances."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has endorsed Bausch & Lomb’s research and recall. The FDA has conducted its own studies of the outbreak. Dr. Daniel Schultz, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, stated, "We can be reasonably certain at this point that we have a good answer and that the actions taken have been appropriate."

Despite the company’s recall of the ReNu with MoistureLoc solution, several lawsuits have already been filed against Bausch & Lomb.
