Scott Colby, 33, was sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to drunken driving and reckless conduct. Colby's original sentencing was scheduled for March, but he didn’t show up. He surrendered to police on May 15.
The accident occurred around midnight on September 11, 2004 as Colby was driving under the influence of alcohol. Prosecutors said that Colby was driving slowly, but he still wasn't in control of the vehicle and crashed his van near his home.
Scott's 15-year-old daughter, Jessica, was riding in the back of the van without a seatbelt when she was thrown inside the cargo area and suffered a broken vertebra. Her friend, who was also in the vehicle when the accident occurred, and Jessica's younger sister, who was buckled into a child seat, were both uninjured.
Jessica was paralyzed from the chest down as a result of the tragic accident.
After the accident, Colby was accused of coercing the teenage girls into lying about the incident. If Colby continues to get into trouble upon his release from prison, he may face an additional sentence of three and a half to seven years after he serves his minimum three-year sentence.
