In February 2004, Bob Taylor was driving home from his office late at night when a Werner Enterprises truck driver turned his tractor-trailer around on a residential street. As the driver turned, the back of his truck hit Taylor’s 1996 Saturn, driving its dashboard down and pinning
Taylor. Emergency personnel used the "jaws of life" to release Taylor, who suffered a closed head injury, a shattered knee cap, and fractures in his hand, forearm, hip and ribs. The truck driver fled the scene, and a police officer soon found him unloading his deliveries at a Home Depot, two miles away.
Taylor's recovery required one month of hospitalization and 11 months off from his job as an IBM engineer. Taylor's attorney, Charles Francis, noted that
Taylor now "has permanent pain in his legs, knees, hips and arms."
The driver, Anthony Daniels, pleaded guilty to hit-and-run, failure to stop in connection with the wreck, and unsafe movement. The $3.9 million settlement from Werner Enterprises becomes final on May 17, 2006, as the lawsuit against them is dismissed.
