The water supplies were contaminated with the carcinogen trichloroethylene, or TCE. TCE is an industrial cleaning agent used as an airplane degreaser.

Associated Aviation Underwriters insured the South Side, Ariz. airport between 1960 and 1972. TCE was found in the area wells in 1981.

Methods of exposure to TCE included drinking, swimming in, and showering in the South Side water. South Side residents have lost a large number of family members to cancer and other diseases since the early 1980s.
