In January 2004, Maurer was injured after his bicycle collided with a car. He was taken to USC Medical Center unable to move his legs and complaining of weakness in his hands.

According to a memorandum from the county counsel, doctors never asked for a neurology or neurosurgery consultation and Maurer was released from the hospital without medication or clinic appointments.

About a week later, Maurer went to a Phoenix hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cervical spinal cord compression. He underwent neck surgery to repair and ease the compression.

The memo stated that the failure of USC Medical Center physicians to evaluate and treat Maurer before discharging him fell below the standard of care and was a contributing factor to Maurer’s current state.

Maurer now lives in a nursing facility and can only walk short distances with the aid of a walker.
