The new study, conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center, measured the incidence of metabolic syndrome in patients taking clozapine. Metabolic syndrome describes a set of conditions such as excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and high cholesterol. Together, these conditions increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Researchers divided patients into two groups – one group was given clozapine and the other acted as a comparison group. At the end of the study, 53.8 percent of the clozapine group had metabolic syndrome, versus 20.7 percent of the comparison group.

The scientists involved in the study say that these findings may help to explain the overall increase of heart disease among patients taking antipsychotic drugs. It has previously been noted that people with schizophrenia tend to eat poorly and exercise less, thus causing weight gain and heart troubles. This study now shows that drugs may play a role as well.

Experts say that because clozapine is such an effective drug, its benefits usually outweigh the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. If you are currently taking clozapine and are worried about the risks, talk to your doctor to determine the best course of action.
