The recall announcement posted by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission stated, “Apple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheated computers and other reports of minor property damage." None of the reports to Apple included serious injuries.

The three Apple laptop models affected by this recall include the 12-inch iBook G4, the 12-inch PowerBook G4, and the 15-inch PowerBook G4. These models were sold in retail stores and through Apple’s online store between October 2003 and August 2006.

Consumers can find out whether they have a recalled battery by calling Apple at 800-275-2273 or by checking their batteries on the company’s website: https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/. Those with defective batteries are instructed to stop using the batteries immediately and use the AC power for their laptops until replacement batteries can be sent.

The Apple and Dell recalls are expected to cost Sony between $172 million and $278 million.
