The Ford S-Max utilizes a comprehensive safety system called Intelligent Protection System (IPS). In addition to equipment designed to help prevent an accident, the IPS system includes a body construction optimized for crashworthiness and strength combined with high-tech restraint equipment to decrease the likelihood and severity of injuries in the event of a crash.
The safety system on the Ford S-Max includes front air bags, an all-new knee air bag on the driver’s side, side-mounted thorax air bags for the front, and window curtain air bags for the front and back. The S-Max also has a three-anchor ISOFIX system on the second row outer seats. Special seats for children are available, which, along with the ISOFIX system, secured a child protection rating of four stars.
The vehicle’s passive safety features include a sophisticated neck injury safety system, three-point seat belts, anti-submarining seat sub-frames, optimized pre-tensioners and load limiters, as well as a collapsible steering system and safety pedals.
The S-Max’s active safety features include a number of important new technologies aimed at providing higher levels of control and accident avoidance. An Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and an optional enhanced Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system are all standard on the new S-Max.
