Aaron Sierra, of Denver, was standing on scaffolding and using a pneumatic staple gun Monday during the construction of a new home in Broomfield, Colorado. He hung the staple gun on the scaffolding as he climbed down. Sierra’s head hit the shooting-end of the staple gun, causing it to discharge.

Sierra, 20, was able to descend the two-story scaffolding, but began to panic over his injury when he reached the bottom. He was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. The 1½ inch fastener was removed from his head the same day.

The Denver office of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is going to investigate the incident for OSHA law violations. Currently, the agency is speaking with the construction site’s contractor and subcontractor.

The staple gun should have had a safety mechanism to avoid this type of accident.
