Simpson, Lachey Divide Assets in Divorce

The couple earned an estimated $36 million during their three-year marriage, due in large part to their MTV reality show "Newlyweds," as well as endorsement deals.

California law requires that assets should be divided equally. Simpson originally offered Lachey $1.5 million, reportedly at the request of Simpson’s father. Lachey rejected the offer and has agreed to a new settlement amount.

Although the terms of the new settlement are as yet undisclosed, Lachey will likely receive more than the $1.5 million but significantly less than the $18 million he was eligible for.

Sources indicate Lachey agreed to the settlement to avoid an ugly court battle.
