Christina Cecilia Anderson of Ontario, Canada, and 48 other people were killed when the plane plunged into a field shortly after taking off from the wrong runway at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport. The co-pilot was the lone survivor of the crash.

Anderson’s family filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Lexington last Thursday, alleging that the pilots were negligent when departing from a short runway not designed for large jets. The lawsuit names Comair as a defendant and stipulates that claims will be filed against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Blue Grass Airport because of inadequate runway diagrams, taxiway names, and signage around the runways.

Comair, FAA, and Blue Grass Airport spokespersons did not comment on the lawsuit, stating that they are waiting for the official report on the crash investigation from the National Transportation Safety Board.
