The EPA’s recent addition of the five sites increases the number of contaminated areas that pose risks to humans and the environment to 1,246.

The five sites added to the list are: Matteo & Sons Inc., Thorofare, New Jersey; ASARCO Taylor Springs, Taylor Springs, Illinois; Ringwood Mines/Landfill, Ringwood, New Jersey; Pesticide Warehouse I, Arecibo, Puerto Rico; and Maunabo Area Ground Water Contamination, Maunabo, Puerto Rico.

In addition to adding the five sites, the EPA has proposed adding six other sites to the list. The number of proposed cleanup sites stands now at 61.

The contaminants found at the sites added to and proposed for the list include benzene, lead, chromium, polychlorinated biphenlys, pentachlorophenol, xylene, zinc, arsenic, and various other heavy metals.

Roughly 70 percent of the cleanups handled through the Superfund program have been conducted by the companies that were at fault for the contamination.
