Call for Increased Whistleblower Protection

Currently, the Senate is proposing a whistleblower amendment to be reviewed during the final conference on the 2007 Defense Authorization Act. According to Stephen M. Kohn, President of the National Whistleblower Center, the amendment does not effectively increase protection of government employees who expose flaws in our national security policy.

Critics of the amendment say that a tragedy like the events of 9/11 will be repeated if federal employees, including members of the FBI and the CIA, do not feel safe reporting breaches in national security for fear of losing their jobs or other negative repercussions.

The National Security Whistleblowers Coalition and other whistleblower organizations have called upon Representative Hunter, chairman of the House Committee on Armed Services, to support House Bill H.R. 5112 during the final Defense Authorization Act conference. They say the bill provides the necessary protection to federal whistleblowers.
