Lockport is about six miles north of Joliet, Illinois. The local utility, Nicor Gas, and Lockport fire personnel do not know for certain what caused the blast, but a natural gas problem is suspected. When firefighters arrived at Guzik’s home, flames were erupting from the house and the back of the house had collapsed. Guzik was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, near Chicago, where he remains in critical condition. His pet dog and cat were also rescued. A spokeswoman for Nicor Gas estimated that it would be months before the cause of the blast is determined.
