The actor was sentenced to three years probation, 60 hours of alcohol rehabilitation and education, 26 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in a six-month period, and $1,500 in fines and penalties.
The sentence stemmed from a late-night July accident in which the 18-year-old lost control of his 1995 Saturn and crashed into a mailbox’s brick pillar while driving through a Los Angeles suburb. The actor, who was not wearing a seatbelt, fractured one rib and injured his shoulder in the accident. His car flipped onto its roof during the collision and traveled a short distance before coming to a stop. No one else was in the car with Osment, and there were no bystanders.
Osment’s blood-alcohol level was found to be 0.16, twice the legal limit for those of legal drinking age, and he was also found to be in possession of marijuana.
The actor was not present at court. His attorney, David Wood, entered the no content pleas on his behalf. Prosecutors dropped two other charges — another misdemeanor DUI and a vehicle code infraction.
In addition to his Academy Award-nominated performance in "The Sixth Sense," Osment also appeared in "Pay It Forward" and just finished work on a new film entitled "Home of the Giants."
