The lawsuit was filed over a March 2005 gas well explosion that left one man dead and three others injured. Marshall Dolye Weaver, 26, of Bethany, Louisiana, died in the blast, and three other men incurred serious burns.

In the lawsuit, the victims' families claimed that a piece of equipment intended to prevent gas well explosions was defective. The suit named the equipment's maker, the contractor who installed the equipment, the well's owner, and the well operator's field agent.
