Refinery Blast Lawsuit Enters Jury Selection Phase

The blast occurred on May 13, 2001, at the Hunt Oil Refinery in west Tuscaloosa. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit -- Kathy Traweek, Riley Spain, and Terri Williams -- all suffered various degrees of burns in the explosion.

The suit seeks damages from Conex International, a company based in Beaumont, Texas, that the plaintiffs say was responsible for the explosion.

Spain and Traweek's attorney, Bob Price, says that Conex workers left a steel hose loose on one of the refinery's machines, causing control room workers to obtain a false reading, which ultimately led to the blast.
