Diane Skier filed the lawsuit on behalf of the death of her father, Abraham Ticknor, 87. In the suit, she says her father died following numerous hospital stays for large bed sores. The suit names as defendants Brooklyn's Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center and Maimonides Medical Center, the hospital where Ticknor died.
Ticknor began his stay at the Geriatric Center in the mid-1990s, after suffering a stroke. His daughter claims that starting in March 2003, the nursing home failed to protect him from developing pressure sores. The suit also claims that Ticknor was left in his own urine and feces on more than one occasion, and that a doctor at the home administered an overdose of the blood-thinner Coumadin.
Also included in legal filings is an allegation that an object, thought to be a phone cord, was placed in Ticknor's rectum at Maimonides hospital. Medical records indicate that a doctor at the nursing home acknowledged the cord. Janet Rothman, vice president of the nursing home, denied the allegation, but would not comment further due to patient privacy laws.
A spokesperson for Maimonides said the hospital is cooperating with the investigation into the matter and is continuing to provide care in accordance with all regulatory agencies.
