Stephen and Julie Southers, 29 and 22, respectively, separately pled not guilty to felony charges of criminal production of dangerous drugs. Their attorney said they would like to prepare more before deciding to enter a guilty plea.

The couple, from Laurel, Montana, was released without bond while awaiting trial.

Court records say that firefighters and investigators found evidence that the couple had an extensive marijuana-growing operation in their attic, including 18 plants, lights, and other items. It was determined that the marijuana was not a factor in starting the fire that killed their daughter, Sorahya Southers.

Authorities believe the fire was started by a cigarette left burning in a covered porch. The couple and their other child escaped unharmed.
