Located in a residential subdivision near the Ross Barnett Reservoir, the home was plagued by a variety of dangerous molds, including penicillium, stachybotrys, and aspergillus. During the seven years that they lived there, the Matthews developed illnesses such as chronic fatigue, migraines, diarrhea, and regular bloody noses.
William and Donna Matthews did not suspect toxic mold was responsible for their family’s symptoms until they began to notice cracks, warped doorframes, and other structural abnormalities around the home. After the house was inspected in 2003, it became evident that serious flaws in its design and construction allowed moisture penetration to cause the mold growth.
The Matthews sued the owner of the home building company that constructed the house and were awarded $2 million in damages. The family now lives in another neighborhood in Ridgeland.
