Her petition asks for legal and physical custody of the couple’s two sons, 1-year-old Sean Preston and 2-month-old Jayden James. Spears, 24, and Federline, 28, married in September of 2004.

This was the second failed marriage for Spears, who wed Jason Allen Alexander in January of 2004 while in Las Vegas. That marriage lasted just 55 hours.

Federline, who recently released a low-selling debut rap album titled “Playing with Fire," already has two children from a previous relationship with actress Shar Jackson.

The Spears-Federline marriage has been chronicled in detail in celebrity magazines since the pair tied the knot, with rumors of problems surfacing often.

The filing, which sites “irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split, came just one day after Spears debuted her revitalized post-pregnancy body on a surprise appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show."

Federline appeared in the movie "You Got Served" and performed as a backup dancer for singer Justin Timberlake, Spears' former boyfriend.
