Peggy T. Robinson, 50, was visiting a friend when the two decided to ride some trails in the area.

Robinson was an inexperienced ATV operator, and the terrain in the area was rough. When Robinson became stuck on some rocks, she accelerated in an attempt to free herself. The acceleration caused the front wheels of the vehicle to rise up. The ATV became unbalanced and rolled back on top of her.

Robinson’s friend, who was riding another ATV, witnessed the accident and left to get help. When he returned after calling authorities, he saw that Robinson was no longer breathing. He tried to revive her with CPR until the paramedics arrived, but he was unsuccessful.

ATV accidents are common in Rim County and often go unreported when there are no serious injuries. When serious accidents do occur, paramedics sometimes need ATVs or helicopters to reach victims because ATV riders can access trails that are beyond the reach of conventional vehicles.

ATV riders are urged to take necessary precautions like wearing a helmet, observing vehicle age and weight restrictions, and carrying a cell phone when riding.
