State-run Iranian television said the plane crashed after initial takeoff; however, some reports say that the plane hit an obstacle while it was still on the runway and exploded.

The plane was reportedly headed to Shiraz, south of Tehran, when it crashed at Mehrabad airport.

Iran has seen a string of crashes in the last few decades, most recently in September when a civilian plane crashed, killing 28 people.

The plane involved in yesterday's disaster was a Russian-designed Antonov-74.
