Jake was treated at Children's Mercy in February 2005 after he collided with a truck while riding a bike. The feeding tube he was given dislodged from his stomach, emptying its contents into his abdomen. The autopsy indicated that his death was caused by an inflammation of the abdominal cavity lining, although his head injury was a contributing factor. Jake's father, Tom Clough, noted that he hoped the hospital would learn from his son's death and pay more attention to parents' concerns. After Jake's death, his parents started a bike safety organization in his honor, The Headstrong for Jake Foundation, which provides safety presentations and bike helmets for young bicyclists.
