New Jersey to Make Divorce Easier

The bill, which has already passed in the state Senate, now awaits Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s his final decision.

Current New Jersey law dictates that couples must separate for 18 months before divorce. Only couples that cite emotional or physical cruelty can terminate their marriage in an expedited timeframe.

Family and religious groups oppose the bill, saying it represents another roadblock to protecting marriage.
