Ortiz, 54, a resident of Cleburne, spent more than two weeks in a hospital in Fort Worth, Texas recovering from his injuries in the June 2004 crash on a state highway in Cleburne. He incurred two bone fractures and several lacerations in addition to the critical back and head injuries. He requires further spinal surgery and extensive physical rehabilitation. His attorney, John D. Hart of Fort Worth, noted that the 18-wheeler that hit Ortiz in his car did not comply with the state Department of Transportation regulations or federal motor-carrier safety regulations pertaining to driver hiring and training. The truck's driver, William Golaz, was employed by JM Oil Field Services at the time of the accident.
