Riverkeeper alleges that over 100 million gallons of groundwater containing the toxins benzene, arsenic, and xylene are being dumped into the creek each year. The dumping, the group claims, is illegal while Exxon is operating without a federal Clean Water Act permit.
Exxon officials claim the dumping is in accordance with a state-issued permit.
The dumping in question is part of Exxon’s efforts to clean up an underground oil spill in Greenpoint which covers 55 acres and contains about 17 million gallons of partially treated groundwater. Exceeding the amount of oil discharged by the Exxon tanker Valdez, it is the nation’s largest urban oil spill.
