According to Parker County fire officials, apparently the girl's grandfather, who works in the propane industry, was trying to fix a problem with the tank at the residence on Tiffany Street on the evening of January 26 when he noticed that a pop-off valve was leaking gas. The gas found its way into the mobile home and exploded when it encountered an ignition source. The resulting fire was so intense that within three minutes of the first call to the fire department, two-thirds of the mobile home was already overtaken by fire. Several other propane tanks near the home exploded after the fire began. Reports of the blast came in from as far as 12 miles away.

Fire officials reported that the girl's mother had dropped her off at her grandparents that day shortly before the explosion. The grandfather was not injured. Parker County officials are continuing their investigation.
