Diana Flaherty was also ordered to pay $5.7 million in restitution and forfeit $5.7 million.

Prosecutors said Flaherty and her husband, Robert Flaherty, ran two companies, which they used as fronts to lure investors. They promised their investors profits of over 300 percent on gold, platinum and other precious metals they claimed they could extract from their volcanic ash cache.

Robert Flaherty passed away in 2001. Diana Flaherty was found guilty last May on multiple charges, including securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, and a number of related conspiracy charges. A co-conspirator, Michael Gardner, awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to securities fraud.
