Before closing its doors in February 2006, Ensign-Bickford manufactured explosives at a plant in Spanish Fork. The groundwater contamination occurred after large quantities of chemicals leaked into the area’s aquifer.

Under the settlement, Ensign-Bickford is required to pay $9.375 million for pumping and treating the polluted water. The company must also establish a $2.58 million trust fund that Mapleton can access to compensate for the natural-resource damage caused by the loss of the aquifer. The total settlement will cost Ensign-Bickford $12 million.
