The barge was carrying nearly one million gallons of cumene, also known as isopropylbenzene. Cumene is a colorless liquid that has a very strong, easily detectable odor. Over-exposure to cumene can lead to dizziness, headaches, euphoria, sleepiness, and eye, nose, and throat irritation. The U.S. Coast Guard, which will conduct an investigation of the cause the accident, also reported that the chemical can become an explosive mixture with the air.

Eight different agencies are participating in the cleanup effort, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the 41st Civil Support Team, and the Atlantic Strike Team. Kirby Chemical Co., the owner of the damaged barge’s cargo, is responsible for paying for the cleanup.

According to the Coast Guard, most recent air quality reports indicate that the surrounding communities are in no immediate danger. Agency representatives estimate that between 7,000 and 8,000 gallons of cumene were leaked into the river.
